TIP 1: Time It Right

You are going to eat that candy one way or another, but the timing can make a difference between a dental scare and dental care. Snacking on Halloween candy throughout the day is the worst way to enjoy your treats because it causes the sugar to remain on your teeth for hours at a time. However, if you enjoy your candy during or shortly after mealtimes, the excess saliva from eating will help cancel out the acid and sugar.

TIP 2: Choose Your Candy Carefully

Not all candies effect your teeth the same way. Hard candy, for example, can be quite harmful for your teeth because the sugar stays in your mouth for long periods of time. Unless this particular hard candy is sugar-free, it is recommended that you choose something any to snack on. Additionally, sticky candy can be especially bad as it sticks to the teeth and is much harder for saliva to be washed away.

TIP 3: Drink More Water

With the extra sugar intake, you will want to increase your water intake as well. All that sugar and acid on your teeth will increase your risk of tooth decay. However, drinking water can help to wash away all the bacteria, sugar, and acid left on your teeth. Plus, it is never a bad idea to keep hydrated.

TIP 4: Chew Sugarless Gum

Chewing on sugarless gum, especially after meals or snacking, significantly increases saliva flow and helps to wash out food and debris from your mouth and neutralize the sugar and acid.

TIP 5: Eat A Healthy Diet

While you should always be eating a healthy diet, it is especially important with an increase in your sugar intake. Firstly, eating will help to fill you up so that you will be more likely to snack on smaller portions. Secondly, eating right will help your body maintain optimal health so that it can better defend against the excess sugar.
