Chewing gum isn’t just for freshening your breath. Believe it or not, it actually has a lot of other useful qualities. But not all gum is created equal. Be sure to go sugarless and pick the right kind of gum that has qualities meant to improve your dental health. If you have a question about which gum is best, consult your dentist.
When choosing your gum, you’ll want to make sure that you go for sugarless. If you chew a gum with sugar in it, the sugars actually turn into food for the bacteria in your mouth. If you feed the bacteria in your mouth, they will multiply and grow, leaving you with a mouth full of gross, smelly bacteria. All that bacteria will give you bad breath, and can cause gum disease and more problem. Picking sugarless gum ensures that you won’t feed the bacteria, and instead your saliva will be able to wash away that bacteria, leaving your mouth cleaner.
Studies have shown that chewing sugarless gum 20 minutes after a meal can help to prevent tooth decay in your mouth. Chewing gum triggers the glands in your mouth to start producing more saliva. The saliva washes away the particles of food and the bacteria that gets left on your teeth after eating. It also dilutes the acid in foods that can eat away at the enamel of your teeth.
Look For ADA Seal
When shopping for your gum, be sure to look for the ADA seal on the package. The ADA (American Dental Association) tests each gum to make sure that it does something to help out your dental health. If you see this seal, it means that the gum has been tested and proven to do one of the following three things:
- Promote remineralization of your tooth enamel
- Reduce cavities and plaque acids
- Reduce gingivitis
