While some orthodontic issues may not require immediate attention, others may be orthodontic emergencies and necessitate prompt action by Dr. Parikh. Don’t hesitate to reach out to Hidden Smiles Orthodontic Studio at (631) 824-6353 for assistance and guidance in any emergency situation. We are here to help you navigate orthodontic emergencies in any way we can.

Even if you have managed to fix the problem on your own, please make sure you call our office to make a repair appointment. If you delay your repairs, it could compromise your treatment and setback your results.

Having food trapped between your teeth isn’t an emergency, but it can certainly be uncomfortable or embarrassing. Fortunately, there is an easy solution. Use dental floss to gently remove the trapped food. For added effectiveness, consider tying a small knot in the middle of the floss. Alternatively, you can use an interproximal brush or toothpick to dislodge the food particles from between your teeth and braces.

If a rubber or wire ligature comes loose, you may be able to reposition it using sterile tweezers. If a wire ligature is sticking out but not loose, gently bend it down to avoid irritation. At your next appointment, make sure Dr. Parikh is aware of any missing or broken ligatures.

It’s normal to experience discomfort after braces or retainer adjustments. Soft foods and warm salt water rinses can help alleviate the discomfort temporarily.

Irritation from braces may exacerbate mouth sores. Apply topical anesthetic directly to the affected area for relief.

Use non-medicinal relief wax to create a barrier between braces and the mouth for added comfort, especially while eating.

If a wire irritates your mouth, gently push it into place with a Q-tip or cover it with relief wax. In extreme cases, you may clip the wire as a last resort.

If a bracket breaks, place it in something secure like a plastic bag and call our office to make an appointment. If your bracket is just loose and not removable, you can temporarily reposition the bracket using sterile tweezers and apply orthodontic wax to alleviate any discomfort.

If you suspect you’ve swallowed a piece of your braces and experience difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical attention. If possible, examine your braces for any resulting issues and contact us.

Preventing Orthodontic Emergencies

Taking good care of your braces is essential for successful treatment. There are various steps you can follow to minimize the risk of orthodontic emergencies. Here are some key measures:

  • Steer clear of hard, sticky foods such as caramels and hard candies.
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing, flossing, and rinsing regularly.
  • Use a mouthguard, particularly during sports activities, to protect your braces.
  • Kick habits like nail biting or chewing on pens/pencils to avoid damaging your braces.
