When emails are exchanged between us, the information is not encrypted, which means it could potentially be accessed and read by a third party as it travels over the Internet. If you receive an email, there’s a possibility that someone could gain access to your email account and read its contents.
HIPAA, which stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, was enacted by the U.S. government in 1996 to establish privacy and security measures for health information. The data stored on our computers is encrypted for protection. However, many popular email services such as Hotmail®, Gmail®, and Yahoo® do not utilize encryption for emails.
Despite the risks, email remains a widely used and convenient means of communication. In the latest update to the HIPAA regulations, the federal government has provided guidance on the use of email in compliance with HIPAA standards. According to these guidelines, if a patient is informed about the risks of unencrypted email and consents to receive health information via email, a healthcare entity may send personal medical information to that patient through unencrypted email.
